New Sustainable Landscape Service – Journey of a Butterfly
Our commitment to sustainability continues with a new service – raising caterpillars to butterflies for release. Gachina recently successfully raised caterpillars into butterflies and released them at our Certified Monarch Garden at Del Monte Shopping Center, Monterey. The process included purchasing, feeding of the different stages of the caterpillars, creating the right environment for the establishment of the cocoons, feeding the adults and finally releasing them. “Gachina Landscape Management is committed to protecting these pollinators” announces Cristina Prevarin, Sustainable Landscape Manager at Gachina. “In areas where butterflies are not a common sight, we install their favorite plant food and habitat and sometime release adults that will feed on those same plants. Within 1-2 weeks, eggs will be laid in this habitat, some more generations will follow the first one, during the spring and summer months. The undisturbed plants will provide shelter to the eggs, during the winter months, so that more butterflies will continue to emerge in the years to come.”
In order to provide the best chances of survival and thriving, herbicide and pesticide applications are not implemented in the sites where pollinators are present. Gachina Landscape Management is dedicated to Protecting our Pollinators.
