Plant of the week 5.23 – 5.27 ~ Juniper/Juniperus
Plant of the week 5.23 – 5.27 ~ Juniper/Juniperus ~ Junipers are an evergreen shrub with low to medium water requirements and thrive in full sun. Juniper flower in the summer and fruit in the winter. Species and varieties range from under 6” tall groundcover to 40’ or more; colors are deep green, blue, and yellow. Natural pruning is recommended; after some years in the landscape, this plant will become woody. At this point, we perform restorative pruning, or remove and replace for a fresh, green look. Junipers were very common 20-30 years ago and are still found in many California landscapes today. Proper maintenance techniques are important since they are so prevalent. Removal and replacement with more drought tolerant and modern plant material are a current trend.
