Plant of the week 5.9 – 5.13 ~ New Zealand Flax/Phormium

Phormium May 9-13Plant of the week 5.9 – 5.13 ~ New Zealand Flax/Phormium ~ Phormium is an evergreen shrub with low to medium water requirements and thrives in full sun.   Phormium has showy flower spikes in the summer. Natural pruning is recommended. The plant looks best when damaged leaves are removed from the base (not tip cut), and old brown leaves are pulled/cut out to keep it tidy.  Phormium are quite hardy, but need to watch for mites and powdery mildew and especially mealy bug.  The mealy bug is a white fuzzy insect which you will find in the leaf base, often just below the soil line.

After watching the Earth Day Live: How Citizen Science Can Help Save the Bees Webinar we learned how to get involved. Earth Challenge 2020 lets you gather important scientific data near you. It has two elements for you to measure — air quality and plastic pollution — with more on the way. Without leaving home, millions of users can record the quality of the air outside their window. Users can take readings throughout the day to track how human activity and weather patterns change the air we breathe. Each reading will add to a global database of knowledge and help us understand how our world works and how we can protect it. #doyourpart #EarthChallenge2020 #EarthDayEveryDay #sustainability #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #landscaping #bayarea #getinvolved ...
