Plant of the week 3.21 – 3.25 ~ Nandina Domestica
Plant of the week 3.21 – 3.25 ~ Nandina Domestica ~ Nandina is an evergreen shrub with medium water requirements which prefers full sun to partial shade. Nandina is better known for its common name of Heavenly Bamboo, although it is not a true bamboo. Nandina have white blossom tufts in the summer and have showy red berries in the winter. Some varieties have deep red foliage during the winter. Dead canes are removed in winter from the bottom of the plant to promote new growth. Nandina can grow in shade, however they become susceptible to powdery mildew & root fungus. We are planting fewer Nandinas in our landscapes these days because of the moderate water requirements, powdery mildew problems, and a tendency to be invasive.
